Pillar II ---> Brain Skills ---> MIND SPEED

What is mind speed?

Mind speed refers to how quickly your brain can process information. Call it mind speed, information-processing speed, mental quickness, or brain clarity, it is a skill that, when well-trained and developed, allows the body to move without any conscious thought.

Why is mind speed important in athletic performance?

The bottom line is that a speedier brain makes quicker and better decisions. While talent, physical training, and conditioning are important, these skills are held back when the brain operates in a mental fog.

At the most elite levels of sport, all athletes are talented. The vast majority are in great shape and work extrememly hard. Mind speed is what enables some athletes to rise far above their competition, despite having no greater physical gifts in terms of size, strength, speed, or technique.

What can athletes do to train and improve their mind speed?

Mind speed is trainable, but very difficult to improve significantly within the boundaries of a standard team practice or strength and conditioning program.

Athlete's who are serious about boosting their mind speed may have to commit to lifestyle changes, which would include:

- healthy eating habits and good nutrition
- proper rest and relaxation
- program of brain training or mentally-challenging activites
- program of vision training; particulary visual memory, peripheral awareness and visualization
