MAKING SENSE OF FIELD SENSE

While it is commonly known that the greatest athletes of all time possess unparalleled field sense, the prevailing trend is to ignore the process by which this skill is learned.

Unlike a jump shot or a penalty kick, field sense — which mixes anticipation, timing, and an acute sense of spatial relations — is considered essentially untrainable, a gift.

Thankfully, scientists are stepping in to study precisely how field sense is acquired. And they're rejecting the notion that this kind of athletic magic is unteachable.
